Bed sizing

There are so many bed sizes on the market today. While it is easy to tell the difference between a twin and a king sized bed, it can sometimes be harder to tell the difference between a full and a queen or the various types of king. It can all be very confusing. It is important to know the sometimes subtle difference in bed length and width so that you can pick the most appropriate bed for you to sleep in comfortably.
The following are bed sizes available and commonly used in the United States: twin, single, double, full, queen, king and California king.
Twin beds are (also known as singles) are 39” wide and 75” long. These are most commonly used in children’s rooms or multi-use guest rooms. These beds fit easily into small bedrooms because they are narrow in size. Twin beds are also used for bunk beds and can sometimes have a trundle bed placed underneath. A trundle bed is a bed slightly smaller than a twin bed that is on casters that can be rolled underneath and pulled out only when needed. Single bed sheets are usually cheap, easy to find and come in a variety of colors and patterns. These beds are also very easy to make since it is easy to reach across the entire bed from one side.
An extra long twin bed is often just five inches longer than a regular twin bed. These are commonly used in dorm rooms to accommodate the size of college students. The real downside to the extra long twin is that sheets are very difficult to find and don’t have much color and pattern options.
A full size bed is often also referred to as a double bed and is 54” wide and 75” long. This bed is only 15” wider than a twin bed so if two people are sleeping in it they both get LESS room than they would in a twin bed alone. This size bed might also be too short for full grown adults. However, full size sheets are easy to find and relatively inexpensive.
A queen size bed is 60” wide and 80” long making it longer than a full size bed, but still allowing less personal space for two people than two twin beds would. Also, a lot of bedding and sheets are offered as full/queen and really fit neither a full or queen exactly right. It is better to look at the dimensions of the sheets to see if they will fit properly.
There are only two types of king sized beds, but four names. It is important to know the difference. A standard king is also called and Eastern king and a California king is also called a Western king. Essentially, if you pushed two extra long twin beds together they would make a standard king sized bed. The dimensions are 76” wide and 80” long. This is the widest bed available. A California (or Western) king is 72” wide and 84” long. This is the longest bed available. The major con for king sized beds is that the bedding can be very expensive.
